Affinisep continues to strengthen its position as a specialist provider of innovative sample preparation technologies for analytical laboratories worldwide, with advanced solutions designed to support the analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in complex matrices.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large group of organic compounds containing two or more fused aromatic rings, primarily generated through the incomplete combustion of wood, fuel, and other organic materials. Due to their potential health risks and environmental impact, PAHs remain an important focus for laboratories operating across food safety, environmental monitoring, and regulatory testing sectors.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) as carcinogenic to humans, while benz[a]anthracene (BaA), chrysene (Chr), and benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) are classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. As a result, maximum levels for these four PAHs (PAH4) are regulated across several food matrices in many regions, including under EU Regulation 2023/915.
In addition, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified 16 PAHs as priority environmental pollutants that are frequently monitored in environmental and analytical testing applications.
To support laboratories analysing these compounds, Affinisep has developed a range of specialised SPE formats designed specifically for PAH analysis in complex matrices.
AFFINIMIP® SPE PAHs
AFFINIMIP® SPE PAHs is based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP) technology, enabling highly selective extraction of PAHs from challenging sample matrices.
In addition to fatty foods and edible oils, these products are also used for determining PAHs in plastics and rubber materials. The ready-to-use extraction protocol has been designed to deliver fast, straightforward, and reliable analytical results while simplifying sample preparation workflows.
Two formats are currently available:
- 3mL format for regulated PAH4 analysis in edible oils
(FS119-03-NG – 50/pk) - 6mL format for broader matrices and extended PAH analysis
(FS119-03B-NG – 50/pk)
As laboratories continue to manage increasingly complex regulatory requirements and quality standards, technologies that improve selectivity, efficiency, and analytical reliability remain critically important.
At PM Separations, we continue to support laboratories across Australia and New Zealand with access to innovative Affinisep sample preparation technologies and expert application support.
